As I approach nearly 30 years in this industry, I can honestly say that being part of the SAAGNY Executive Board has been a wonderful experience. This association has played a meaningful role in my career, and it’s incredibly special to now help shape what SAAGNY delivers to our members as we continue to grow and EVOLVE.

Coming off our rescheduled Winter Show, I’m especially energized! Despite the shift in timing, it became one of our most successful winter shows in years and served as a great precursor to what we’re building toward for Promo East NYC in June 2026. SAVE THE DATE – June 15^th & 16^th!

Behind the scenes, a dedicated committee is hard at work reimagining what a truly standout marketing experience a show can be. From a signature event the night before, to a more engaging and interactive show floor, everything is being thoughtfully designed to highlight trends in a way that feels current, exciting, and relevant. The goal is simple: to help you walk your clients through the show with confidence and pride for this industry we all love so much.

We’re also focused on creating meaningful experiences for all our members. This includes an inspiring message from a keynote speaker, new sponsorship opportunities for our suppliers, dedicated spaces designed for distributors to connect, recharge, and collaborate with enhanced moments that elevate how members engage throughout the event. Dear SAAGNY Community,

As we reflect on the momentum of the past months, I am proud of what we have accomplished together as a community.

Our Winter Show was a tremendous success, even with the challenges surrounding the rescheduled date. The flexibility, professionalism, and partnership demonstrated by our exhibitors and attendees were truly appreciated. Thank you for your understanding and for working collaboratively to ensure the show delivered value to everyone involved. Your commitment to SAAGNY and to each other speaks volumes about the strength of this community.

We were also excited to elevate the overall attendee experience. The introduction of the VIP Member Lounge created a premium environment for networking, education, and relaxation. The SAAGNY Event App enhanced connectivity and engagement across the show floor, while advancements in registration and check in technology streamlined entry and improved efficiency. These enhancements reflect our ongoing commitment to modernizing and improving every touchpoint of our events.

This reimagined and redesigned event will bring a fresh, dynamic experience to our marketplace. Beyond the trade show floor, our recent Pickleball networking event was another great success. It was fantastic to see members connecting in a fun and energetic setting. As we glide into February—thanks in part to a winter snowstorm that gently nudged the SAAGNY Winter Showcase to its new date of February 12, 2026—we’re energized by the incredible buzz coming out of PPAI—the fresh ideas, new innovations, and creative inspiration we can bring directly to our customers. It’s an exciting time in our industry, full of momentum and possibility.

February is also the perfect moment to pause and show a little gratitude. Whether it’s thanking loyal customers, reconnecting with someone you haven’t spoken to in a while, or taking that first step toward a new relationship, this month reminds us that small gestures can make a big impact.

As the season continues to ramp up, remember that a simple reach-out, a thoughtful note, or a moment of appreciation goes a long way. A glance, a step forward, a bit of intention—those are often where the best connections begin.

I hope this message finds you well and energized as we kick off another exciting year together.

First, I want to share how much I enjoyed my time at PPAI Expo. It was truly a fantastic experience to be surrounded by so many familiar faces, and just as exciting to meet new ones. Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak with me, connect, and share what’s happening in your world. Those conversations are what make our community so special, and they reinforce just how strong and collaborative our industry continues to be.

As many of you know, weather significantly impacted the original date of the SAAGNY Winter Show, along with several other events across our region. While it’s always disappointing to shift plans, we’re grateful for everyone’s flexibility and support.

SAAGNY’s new Winter Show date is February 12th, and we cannot wait to see you there.

I am humbled and honored to step into the role of Vice President of SAAGNY for the upcoming year. SAAGNY holds a special place in my heart for many reasons, but above all, it’s the strong sense of community that truly sets us apart.

This year, our focus is more intentional than ever on YOU, our members. Everything we are doing is centered around driving greater engagement, improving how you connect with SAAGNY, and elevating the overall member experience so we can continue to grow stronger and better than ever. We have an exciting year ahead, starting with the Winter Show in Suffern, the relaunch of an elevated Promotions East back in New York City as SAAGNY’s signature event, the redesign of the SAAGNY website, and the launch of the new SAAGNY app, all built to make it easier for you to engage, connect, and get value from your membership. It truly is all about YOU.

Happy and Healthy New Year to all!

As I begin my second year as President of SAAGNY, I do so with deep gratitude. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve this community, a community that holds each other close, supports one another, stands together, challenges ideas, voices concerns, and laughs together. We are united by a shared commitment to see our regional association continue to grow and thrive. I am grateful to those who came before me and to those who will follow.

I am incredibly grateful for our Board of Directors. As Dan Edge (Peerless) rotates off the board, I want to thank him for his dedication and service. I equally excited to welcome Jeff Hinds (ETS Express), who will be an outstanding addition to the group.

This board of 11 committed leaders has worked hard to take a deep look at SAAGNY and made some needed strategic changes to insure it’s long-term growth. I am grateful for a Board that is focused, energized, and dedicated to deliver what will be the best version of SAAGNY in 2026, and for all the volunteers on the different committees that show the same level of enthusiasm.

I am deeply grateful to the SAAGNY Foundation for its continued dedication to fundraising for scholarships and for consistently showing up for meaningful volunteer opportunities. Your efforts bring smiles to so many children’s faces. Thank you for all that you do.

I am grateful to our Executive Director, John Cudahy, who has become the compass of our organization and is working hard to keep moving us forward. John has grown into this role through his passion for SAAGNY and his commitment to this community.

Most of all, I am grateful for all of YOU. You inspire us to do better. In 2026, we will deliver truly ELEVATED programming that highlights the value of being part of SAAGNY, YOUR regional association. Expect VIP experiences at our shows, learn to use of the app, connect with one another and get to know your community, come to events and see why we are better together.

Foundation Message - January 2026

I am incredibly honored and excited to step into the role of Chair of the SAAGNY Foundation. This organization holds a special place in my heart because it embodies the generosity, compassion, and sense of community that define both our association and the promotional products industry as a whole. For many years, the Foundation has served as a symbol of how our members come together not only to support one another professionally, but also to extend kindness and care to those in need.

As we continue our charitable mission, I am proud to share one of our first initiatives of the year. At the SAAGNY Winter Show, the Foundation will be collecting unopened jars of peanut butter and jelly to support People to People, Rockland County’s largest food pantry. This simple act of giving can have an enormous impact, providing children and families with essential food items that are both meaningful and accessible. I encourage everyone attending the show to participate in this effort. A small donation from each of us can collectively create a significant difference for our local community.

I am deeply grateful to the leaders, volunteers, and supporters who have built such a strong and vibrant foundation over the years. Their dedication has paved the way for meaningful charitable work, and I am committed to honoring that legacy while bringing new energy and ideas to our mission. I look forward to working closely with our Board, volunteers, and the entire SAAGNY community as we continue to expand our outreach and strengthen the impact we make together.

This year marked a record number of submissions, reflecting the continued growth and impact of this important initiative.

SAAGNY Announces Appointment of Josh Goodelman to Board of Directors

SAAGNY Honors Brett Schaffer, MAS, with Induction into the 2024 SAAGNY Hall of Fame

Fort Lee, NJ – November 25th, 2024 – The Specialty Advertising Association of Greater New York (SAAGNY) is proud to announce that Brett Schaffer, MAS, has been selected for induction into the 2024 SAAGNY Hall of Fame, recognizing his significant contributions and unwavering dedication to SAAGNY and the promotional products industry.

Brett's journey with SAAGNY began at an early age, as he grew up immersed in the industry, learning the ropes from his parents, Joel and Elyse Schaffer, both longstanding SAAGNY members. Following his graduation from Virginia Tech, Brett briefly ventured outside the promotional products world before joining the family business, Soundline, where he quickly began establishing his own legacy.

Brett’s commitment to SAAGNY began formally in 2001 when he joined the Technology Committee. This marked the start of a decade-plus-long volunteer career dedicated to supporting SAAGNY’s mission. In 2002, Brett joined the Promotions East Marketing Committee, and just two years later, he took on the leadership role as Chair of the Show Floor Sub-Committee, a position requiring countless volunteer hours and deep commitment. His exemplary work in this capacity led him to be appointed to an unexpired term on the SAAGNY Board by then-President Mark Stewart in 2005. Brett’s leadership and quick rise through the ranks underscored his dedication, intelligence, and ability to guide peers through complex and challenging industry decisions.

In 2007, Brett advanced to the SAAGNY Executive Committee, serving as Treasurer, and later as President in 2010. During his time on the executive team, Brett's calm, thoughtful, and reasoned approach was invaluable, guiding the organization through major transitions, including changes in executive leadership, a reimagining of Promotions East, an office relocation, and financial challenges.

Brett's contributions extend beyond his board service. A long-time volunteer with the SAAGNY Foundation, he supported events like Happiness is Camping, bringing joy to campers with his signature pirate costume and high-tech scavenger hunts. His dedication to helping wherever needed exemplifies his generous spirit, a trait likely inherited from his parents.

"It's an incredible honor to be recognized by my peers for the work that I have done. I am truly humbled, but more importantly, thankful, for those volunteers whom I worked with during my years at SAAGNY. It was a team mentality from start to finish. As a member of multiple committees and the Board of Directors, we did some challenging work together, and it was always rewarding to see our plans come to fruition. What I did not expect were the business relationships that blossomed and the friendships that I made that still endure to this day. I truly have gotten back more than I put in" stated Schaffer.

Beyond SAAGNY, Brett has also served the Carolinas Association of Advertising and Marketing Professionals (CAAMP) as Treasurer, Promotional Products Association International (PPAI) on several committees, most recently the Professional Development Committee, and contributed his expertise as both a moderator and panelist for educational sessions across multiple industry organizations. His commitment to community service extended to his son’s Cub Scout Pack and his local synagogue in New Jersey, roles he only left when his family relocated.

"Brett's leadership has left an indelible mark on SAAGNY and the Promotional Products industry," said SAAGNY President, Sean Kurtzman. “He has shown steadfast dedication to our organization and industry, handling every challenge with diplomacy and respect. Geiger Hires Amanda Kaeppler as Regional Vice President of the Northeast Territory

With over 20 years of industry experience, Kaeppler brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her new role at Geiger. Kaeppler previously served as Branded Merchandise Business Development Manager for Taylor Healthcare. During her eight years at Taylor, she played a pivotal role in driving sales growth through targeted sales strategies and partnerships.

This year's SAAGNY Annual Meeting & Holiday Party, held on December 14th at the Captain Lawrence Brewing Company, marked a delightful departure from tradition. The new, unique venue provided a refreshing backdrop for industry professionals to come together in a relaxed atmosphere, fostering camaraderie and celebration. As the year draws to a close, it was a time not only for festivities but also for reflection on the accomplishments of 2023.

One significant development at the meeting was the update to SAAGNY's bylaws. Recognizing the need for additional leadership to support the association's continued growth, the membership unanimously voted to add two new board seats. This adjustment is deemed essential, especially with the increased responsibilities stemming from the relaunch and success of Promotions East.

The SAAGNY community warmly welcomed two outstanding individuals to the board during the meeting. Melissa Casey from Pacesetter Awards and Ashley Smalley from Gemline bring a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the leadership team. Their diverse backgrounds and industry insights will undoubtedly contribute to the association's forward momentum.

Consisting of two days of exclusive programming, end users will get a sneak preview of products on October 3rd and a full day of access to the exhibit hall and show features taking place October 4th.

SAAGNY President, Michael Reisbaum stated, “We are continuing to create an innovative, redesigned, and totally productive Q4 event for the Promotional Products Industry. SAAGNY again disrupts the traditional trade show space by adding a highly demanded end user component; paring it with the groundbreaking aspects unveiled in 2022. The Specialty Advertising Association of Greater New York (SAAGNY) has grown to be the largest regional Promotional Products association in the country. Our growth would not have been possible without the visionary planning and untiring efforts of a few outstanding leaders.

The SAAGNY Hall of Fame recognizes the extraordinary achievements of these leaders who have contributed to our success. This is your opportunity to help choose the next recipient of this prestigious honor. When making your selection, please keep in mind the criteria outlined in the application below:

SAAGNY Pioneers

SAAGNY Pioneers are defined as individuals previously employed by member companies who are no longer active in our region or business and served AMASS or SAAGNY prior to 1989. Pioneers will be voted on via a separate nomination from the regular Hall of Fame. Anyone that served SAAGNY from 1989 and prior will be considered a potential Pioneer Club inductee.

SAAGNY Contemporaries

SAAGNY Contemporaries are defined as current or past members who have volunteered with SAAGNY.

The nominee shall have made significant and lasting contributions to SAAGNY and the Promotional Products industry and have served on a committee or on the Board of Directors of SAAGNY. To be eligible, the nominee must have served as a committee or board volunteer and:

· Has not served on the SAAGNY Board of Directors for a minimum of three (3) years before nomination to the Hall of Fame; or
· Continues to serve on the Board of Directors but has an aggregate of 10 years’ volunteer service to SAAGNY as a committee or board member prior to nomination to the Hall of Fame
· Members of the Hall of Fame Committee are not eligible for nomination

SAAGNY HOSTS ANNUAL SUMMER SHOWCASE

The Specialty Advertising Association of Greater New York (SAAGNY) hosted their eighth annual Summer Showcase for promotional products distributors and their clients this past Tuesday.

Traffic on the show floor was brisk from the time the show opened at 10:30 am until it closed at 3:00 pm with over 400 attendees in total at the show. SAAGNY and the Summer Show returned to New York City for the first time since 2019 and the energy and excitement was palpable.

SAAGNY President Rachel Levin remarked, “The sentiment is still holding that now more than ever it is great seeing people in-person, engaging, smiling, and networking all in one place. The energy was contagious with all of the laughter, smiles, and fun while educating the buyers themselves on quality promotional products. Seeing the individuals in attendance that came from across the country was awe-inspiring, to say the least.”

The Show included a “Best In Show” display, featuring favorite items from exhibiting suppliers, a gourmet lunch for all in attendance, an ice cream cart for a sweet afternoon treat, and gift bags for the end-users, filled with promotional products from exhibiting suppliers.

Thank you to all who assisted The SAAGNY Foundation in their sock collection for Housing Works Chelsea. Five large boxes of new socks were donated to Housing Works, a healing community of people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS whose mission is to end the dual crises of homelessness and AIDS through relentless advocacy, the provision of lifesaving services, and entrepreneurial businesses that sustain our efforts.

The SAAGNY Foundation Chair Sara Levinson, MAS, noted, “The SAAGNY Foundation is grateful to have had the privilege to work with Housing Works to re-purpose promotional merchandise that was produced and not used. We are so thankful to everyone in our community that was at the SAAGNY Summer Show and purchased/donated socks to contribute to this effort.”

Remarked SAAGNY Executive Director Donna-Jean Plante, CAE, “It was gratifying to see the hard work of the volunteers, board, and staff come together to make the Summer Show another successful SAAGNY show. I look forward to seeing even more distributors and more of their clients at next year’s event.”

We regret to inform you of the passing of our member, Arthur Hilton Richter, cherished husband of Peter Neivert, devoted father of Larry (Connie), and Michael Richter, adored grandfather of Maxwell, Tyler and Jake Richter, brother of Barbara Richter-Bolan and brother in-law of Henry Bolan on May 1, 2022/30 Nisan 5782. Services will be held at Temple Beth El on Friday, May 13 at noon. Please, no mourning attire. Dress as if you were attending a party at Arthur and Peter's home. For the safety of all guests, please wear face masks. Burial will be private. May his memory be a blessing.

Obituary

Arthur Hilton Richter of Barrington, Rhode Island passed away suddenly on Sunday May 1st, 2022. Arthur was born on April 11, 1939 to Mollie Stanzler Richter and Leonard Richter. He graduated from Hope High School and completed his Bachelors in Business from Boston University. After completing his degree he worked in the import/export business, traveling extensively throughout Asia.

As a devoted father and grandfather, his family was critically important to him. His son Larry and daughter in law, Connie, reside in Fort Lauderdale, Florida while his son Michael resides in San Diego, California. He adored his grandsons Maxwell, Tyler, and Jake Richter and has been with his beloved husband, Peter Neivert, since 2005. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Richter-Bolan and brother in-law Henry Bolan.

Arthur had no acquaintances, only friends. He was insatiably curious about other people and was always a devoted friend, cheerleader, and confidante, to literally hundreds of people.

Arthur retired early to pursue his passions and spend time with his family. Throughout his life he was enthusiastically engaged in his work with the Human Rights Campaign to further LGBTQ activism on a local and national level. He has also served as a passionate leader in lifelong learning; leading classes covering all aspects of theater, film, architecture, and the arts. Arthur is known to host extravagant gatherings onboard his pontoon boat in Narragansett Bay.

Arthur’s love for travel, the arts, and the state of Rhode Island, combined with his personability, drive, love for others, and overall joy for life, epitomize the fabulous way he hoped to live.

The Power of District “1” Shows a Success!

From Maine to Chesapeake and NYC to Harrisburg we had you covered! The Chesapeake Promotional Products Association (CPPA), New England Promotional Products Association (NEPPA), Philadelphia Area Promotional Products Association (PAPPA), and Specialty Advertising Association of Greater New York (SAAGNY) are proud to announce the success of their first annual Power of District “1” Shows collaboration which was held January 24-27 with over 500 distributor attendees.

CPPA, NEPPA, PAPPA, and SAAGNY, all members of District 1’s regional association community, have worked together to foster communication and cooperation between their associations and their community of members. Each day of the week a different regional hosted a thought-provoking educational component which featured Cliff Quicksell, MAS+. Cliff was able to share his expertise and enthusiasm for the Promotional Product industry with over 200 attendees throughout the week. One distributor remarked, "As always, Cliff brings an amazing level of energy and insight to his topic. Very enjoyable and thought provoking!"

NEPPA began the week hosting its first ever Winter Expo in Rocky Hill, CT. Loren Cayer, CAS, NEPPA President and Show Chair, was very pleased with the turnout, stating, “This first ever show was extremely well supported and a tremendous success. The energy was spectacular, and it was clear people were happy to be back together again rekindling those Distributor/Supplier partnerships and friendships.”

Adding to the show experience, NEPPA Cares held a Winter Warm-up Food Drive and was thrilled to make a generous donation along with several boxes of food and helpful items to the Connecticut Food Bank.

Cayer further noted, “Being part of the Power of District “1” Shows week was a terrific experience. 2022 stands to be a tremendous year for Regionals and we’re excited to continue our partnership. Uniting to ensure our future is secure will be a priority and in the best interest of current and future members.”

Dan Edge, SAAGNY Director, remarked “These regional shows, whether ours or others, are truly the best way to get in front of people right now (speaking from a supplier’s point of view). And I have to imagine from a distributors view, it’s a great way to see and touch products, which is so valuable. With fewer people in offices and doing in person meetings, these smaller shows are a safe and inviting environment to meet.”

SAAGNY President, Rachel Levin, further noted, “Since the beginning term of my position as the President of SAAGNY, it has always been a mission to work closely, collaborate, and connect with our fellow regionals. We all share the same goals which are focused on our members. The first annual Power of District “1” Shows is just the beginning where we combine resources, values, and communities that will allow us to connect and share best practices amongst the Northeast geographical region of our industry.”

PAPPA was very pleased to take part in the Power of District “1” Show week. Celebrating our 50^th Anniversary this year, PAPPA past presidents and members attended a pre-show Cocktail Reception on January 25. According to PAPPA President Staci Whittington, “The show was busy from the “get go” on January 26 with a line of distributors checking in when the doors opened and staying for the whole show.” There were 141 distributors in attendance and several prizes were given away in recognition of the 50^th Anniversary. Staci also noted, “PAPPA shifted to a three-hour show model from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 2021 and this has kept the shows busy from beginning to end.”

In the spirit of giving back, PAPPA members also provided a van-full of product and clothing donations to the Mitzvah Circle Foundation to help those in need in the Philadelphia area.

“I was delighted to be part of this great collaboration on two fronts, one as President of CPPA, and second, the traveling speaker at each of the four shows. The excitement of ALL the attendees, suppliers and marketing professionals was so encouraging to see. People are so ready to back to business and it showed by the high-attendance rates and positive engagement. I am so proud of ALL the Executive Directors and fellow presidents who had the foresight to put this great event together. Job Well-Done”, noted Cliff Quicksell, MAS+.

SAAGNY Mentoring Circles - Join Us!

Did you know that according to a recent LinkedIn Survey - 80% said having a mentor was important, but only 20% actually had a mentor at one point in their career?

SAAGNY is pleased to announce the launch of a new program, SAAGNY Mentoring Circles. Mentoring has always been a prominent, yet informal, aspect of what SAAGNY does, through networking events, committee participation and engagement, and our trade shows. In light of how the Promotional Products industry has pivoted in the face of the COVID pandemic, SAAGNY has developed a more comprehensive mentoring framework that fits the needs of ALL of our Members during these changing times.

What Are Mentoring Circles?

Mentoring circles are a form of group mentoring that encourages participants from all employment levels of SAAGNY to propose and own a topic of interest. This unique setup gives members an avenue to grow within their profession to find or create a circle that motivates them. These circles can occur virtually or in person depending on the participants and Covid restrictions.

With the growth of Sheryl Sandberg’s lean-in philosophy and community meet ups, mentoring circles have become an increasingly popular way for individuals to grow within their profession. Leading a mentoring circle is a great way to grow as a leader because you learn and practice influencing and facilitation skills.

What Are the Benefits of Mentoring Circles?

With mentoring circles, participants can build more robust networks and connections they can turn to for support in new roles, projects, and future activities. Participants can learn about various skills and tools that can help them grow in their current roles and advance within their career. From management skills and customer relationship management best practices to handling customer conflict and ethics, mentoring circles can impart knowledge to participants through others’ experiences and lessons learned.

The group style of mentoring circles elevates accountability for all involved. This type of interaction builds trust between members, which allows them to come together in support of each other’s goals while seeking to achieve their own. It also relies on participants to show up and interact. This group commitment keeps members engaged. These connections can create and build a more productive path to collaboration, and eventually greater innovation within the participants and industry.

Mentoring Goals

Everyone has their own but below are a few that SAAGNY will suggest for the mentoring circles.

· Public speaking/presentation skills
· Life/work balance
· Becoming a better manager/working with teams
· Career trajectories/next steps/5-year plans
· People skills
· Short-term and long-term goals
· Accountability

Tell Me About SAAGNY Mentoring Circles.
Each SAAGNY Mentoring Circle will be comprised of 5-7 people, led by a single mentor matched with 4-6 mentees. The Mentoring Circle will become a small community, in which mentors and mentees will develop individual mentorship relationships and the Circle as a whole will function to address a larger need for community, connection, and professional development. SAAGNY does not intend for groups to grow much larger, as participants speak up less and provide fewer individual contributions.

It is SAAGNY’s hope that there will be occasions where everyone in the program will gather together virtually and in-person, to allow cross-Circle interactions and leverage the knowledge-base and relationships of all our mentors. Mentoring circles will meet once every two months, or more frequently at the discretion of each Circle. In addition, mentors will be asked to have at least one one-on-one meeting with each of their mentees during each two-month period.

Mentoring circles allow industry colleagues to learn from one another in a supportive format, and also drive knowledge transfer and engagement. It’s a new spin on a long-valued learning technique. And whether groups want to come together to provide mutual support, build professional networks, or develop specific skills, SAAGNY’s mentoring circles program is a creative new addition to our member benefits.

SAAGNY Mourns the Loss of John Kelly, MV Sport

John Joseph Kelly, 70, of Jamison, passed away in his sleep on Sunday January 9, 2022. He was the husband of Gloria (Cap) Kelly. Born in Philadelphia in March of 1951, he was the son of the late Joseph and Veronica (McGarry) Kelly.

John was a proud alumnus of Saint Cecilia School and Cardinal Dougherty High School.

John and Cap met on a blind date and were married in 1978. The couple resided in Jamison where they raised their sons, Ryan and Grady.

John was Manager of Team Sales for Gold Medal Sporting Goods Stores and most recently John worked as a sales rep for MV Sport. In the 80s and 90s John volunteered as a soccer coach for Buckingham AA and baseball and basketball coach for DAA. He also volunteered his time with Redeemer Lutheran Cub Scouts as well as Troop 52 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

In recent years John enjoyed playing in two softball leagues and during the pandemic, John enjoyed many long walks on local trails with his wife and sons. Above all else, John enjoyed time spent with his beloved family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother: Joe Kelly of Philadelphia, his sister: Betty Anne Forte of Warminster as well as his pets: Chance, Oliver, Milo and Otis.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons: Ryan Kelly of California and Grady Kelly of New York; siblings: Frank Kelly of Philadelphia; Bill (Pat) Kelly of New Jersey; Tom (Bobbie) Kelly of New Jersey; Ronnie (John) McKenna of Huntington Valley along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation from 10-11 a.m. Friday January 14, 2022 at Reed and Steinbach Funeral Home, 2335 Lower State Road, Doylestown. Services and interment will be private. SAAGNY RECOGNIZES INDUSTRY LEADERS AT ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY

The Specialty Advertising Association of Greater New York (SAAGNY) announced the winners of the association’s annual awards during its Holiday Party, held this past evening at the Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle, NY. Supplier, Distributor, John J. Pagano Multiline Representative, Customer Service Representative, Humanitarian of the Year, and more were among the awards presented. The Diamond Award Winners were also announced and the 2021 40 Under 40 Recipients recognized.

The SAAGNY Board of Directors established these awards to recognize those companies and individuals that best represent the ideals of the promotional advertising industry. The winners of these awards were all nominated and voted on by the association’s members in balloting conducted in September and October. Rachel Levin, CAS, SAAGNY President, remarked, “So many faces both old and new, gathered together to honor and celebrate success! Seeing everyone out of the office and onto the dance floor was a great reminder of how important the SAAGNY community is. It was a night to remember!!!!”

In addition, The SAAGNY Foundation honored Harvey Mackler, MAS+, by installing him into The SAAGNY Foundation Hall of Fame. Harvey who was unable to be in person to accept his award noted in his prepared remarks, “It is an honor to be inducted into The SAAGNY Foundation Hall of Fame, and it is also an acknowledgement of the many industry colleagues who worked tirelessly alongside me. It was easy to follow the leadership paths blazed by the previous Chairs, Bill Lazarus and Joel Schaffer. There were countless volunteers and committed hours. We need to continue to “do good.”

Lynn Millinger and Chris Bloomer, Co-Chairs, The SAAGNY Foundation, noted “Harvey was instrumental in actively fundraising and integral to growth of the Foundation. The Foundation also wants to express our appreciation to Foundation Past President Melissa Casey for the gracious donation of the award created by Pacesetter Awards.”

SAAGNY Elects New Executive Committee for 2022

The Specialty Advertising Association of Greater New York (SAAGNY) Board of Directors, in accordance with the association bylaws, elected three Directors to serve as officers in 2022. All terms begin on January 1, 2022.

The 2022 Executive Committee will include Rachel Levin, CAS, distributor Stran Promotional Solutions will continue as President; Michael Reisbaum, of supplier Blue Generation will continue as Vice President; and Jeff Depalma of Geiger as Secretary/Treasurer. Paul Sprunk of MLR-Paul Sprunk Associates will remain on the board and Executive Committee as Immediate Past President.

SAAGNY President Rachel Levin, CAS, remarked, “The organization requires the very best that SAAGNY has to offer, and we are constantly striving to come up with ways we can innovate and lead. I am beyond honored to lead a board that includes the caliber of professionals our members deserve. With that, I am proud to begin working with the new executive committee, Jeff, Michael, and Paul in 2022. I want to personally thank each and every member of the SAAGNY Board for their contributions, time, and continued professionalism that allows us to better our organization as a whole.”

Three Incredible Fall Shows

The Specialty Advertising Association of Greater New York (SAAGNY) and its members have gathered three times for indoor shows in the past month. The last two being held Tuesday, October 5 at the Melville Marriott and Thursday, October 7, at the Crowne Plaza Suffern-Mahwah. Both of these shows included a client component. The smiles and energy of all was extremely contagious. A buffet lunch was served both days for all. It was a joy to see suppliers, distributors and their clients eating, laughing, and learning.

On October 7 in Suffern, the day began with an interactive panel discussion featuring Dan Edge, Peerless; Brett Hersh, Hit Promotional Products; Joe Hoffmann, iPROMOTEu; Mike Merkin, Hit Promotional Products; Andy Shape, Stran Promotional Solutions; and SAAGNY President Rachel Levin. This engaging discussion between the panel and the 45+ attendees covered such topics as supply chain issues, customer wants and needs, how to speak to your customers, and industry forecasts.

Knowing that some of our loyal distributor members might not be able to be in attendance, SAAGNY arranged to have each supplier videotape their Promo Sales Pitch. Those videos once edited, will be placed on the SAAGNY website for our distributor members to catch up with their favorite suppliers. SAAGNY President, Rachel Levin noted, “Three incredible shows, six incredible panelists, over 300 distributor and client attendees, and hundreds of new products. What a way to start off Q4! I’m incredibly proud of our Board and our Executive Director for remaining focused on providing such great value to our members!”

The SAAGNY Foundation Hall of Fame recognizes the extraordinary achievements of the leaders who have contributed to it's success. This is your opportunity to help choose the next recipient of this prestigious honor. When making your selection, please keep in mind the criteria outlined below:

Individuals employed or associated with our industry that are examples of volunteering, contributing and supporting the SAAGNY Foundation mission statement.
The nominee shall have made significant and lasting contributions to the SAAGNY Foundation and has demonstrated leadership, volunteerism, community service, and good character.
Anyone that has served SAAGNY Foundation as a board member or volunteer will be considered.
Nominations can include past board members, SAAGNY members and non-industry volunteers. Present Board members are not eligible.

The Specialty Advertising Association of Greater New York (SAAGNY) and its members were euphoric on Tuesday, September 14, as they gathered at the Teaneck Marriott at Glenpointe, for their first indoor trade show in nineteen months. The positive energy was palpable. Exhibitors had smiles on their faces, as if they were children on Christmas morning, as they arrived to set up their booths.

The day began with an interactive educational session featuring PPAI President and CEO Dale Denham and SAAGNY President Rachel Levin engaging the 60+ attendees in conversations regarding their businesses, supply chain issues, customer wants and needs, and how PPAI and SAAGNY can help them now and in the future.

This was followed by the trade show in the Grand Ballroom. Knowing that there would be some of our loyal distributor members who would not be able to be in attendance, SAAGNY arranged to have each supplier in attendance to be videotape their Promo Sales Pitch. Those videos once edited, will be placed on the SAAGNY website for our distributor members to catch up with their favorite suppliers. SAAGNY President, Rachel Levin noted, “Watching vendors and distributors reengaging, in-person, was incredible! From our conversation with Dale Denham, to the tradeshow floor, we, as a board, were extremely proud of the turnout and are looking forward to our next two end-user shows in October.”

The Specialty Advertising Association of Greater New York (SAAGNY) is pleased to announce Promotions East is back! This premier East Coast experience will be held October 16–19, 2022 at Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City. https://www.caesars.com/harrahs-ac/hotel). Stay tuned for some virtual sneak peaks coming Fall 2021 as well as at our three Fall Shows.

Rachel Levin, CAS, SAAGNY President, noted, “As the world opens back up, people are interacting with each other differently, not only in the events industry but within society as a whole. As a result, in-person events are reemerging in new ways and we’re pleased to incorporate this shift into Promotions East 2022. The experience will be like no other! We have a solid committee, a dedicated board, an incredible executive director, and multiple partners that are integral to putting our vision to paper.”

The stage is set in 2022 for several days of a redesigned, reimagined, and renewed show. SAAGNY is looking forward to providing what industry attendees and exhibitors have come to expect– exceptional education, networking, and ideas for business growth. SAAGNY is planning an experiential component to increase value for ALL attendees.

Promotions East Committee Chair and SAAGNY Vice President, Michael Reisbaum, commented, “In 2022, the Promo Industry deserves an event unlike anything we’ve ever seen, and SAAGNY and the Promotions East Committee are dedicated to providing just that. A completely refurbished and updated event locale, new social and networking opportunities, innovative and creative ways to access exhibitors and attendees, and dynamic and productive education will be the hallmarks of Promotions East 2022.”

“Back to normal is boring!” noted Promotions East Committee Member Charity Gibson, Peerless. “We're changing things up and while it's a little scary, it's necessary and worthwhile. The venue, the education, the events – all world class. It's been an honor to be on the planning committee for this event. There is no doubt that Promotions East 2022 is going to be a total game-changer.”

Another Committee Member, Meg Erber, S & S Activewear, stated, “We have been working behind the scenes to orchestrate a renovated show and a modernized EXPERIENCE. We are taking this show to a new, inclusive venue with engaging experiences that say, ‘We are back and we are intentional!’”

Industry veteran Joel Shaffer, MAS, commented, “As a veteran of 50 years of SAAGNY shows, from the Catskills to Atlantic City, the future of SAAGNY's Promotions East holds great promise. I look forward to the fusion of the social atmosphere we had at the Concord with the mega professional shows SAAGNY built in AC over the past 20 years. The new Promotions East will blend the current world of technology with old-world relationship building on the show floor and in the after-hours social events. SAAGNY will once again produce the greatest show on the East Coast.”

Finally, Eric Levin, alphabroder/Prime, remarked, “I have spoken to many suppliers and distributors who are so eager for this event. The timing couldn’t be better to see what’s new as we go into the holiday gift season.”

SAAGNY recently held a logo contest and asked the Promo Community to submit logos for Promotions East. With more than 50 creative submissions, it was a challenging task for the Promotions East Committee and SAAGNY Board to select the winning submission from Joyce Ponton, HALO Branded Solutions. Her design was chosen for the attention to detail and tag line – Educate, Connect, and Explore.

Introducing SAAGNY's 40 Under Forty

SAAGNY’s 40 Under Forty is a celebration of young promotional products professionals in the SAAGNY community. The process of selecting SAAGNY’s 40 Under Forty begins with nominations.

Nominees must be 39 years or younger (born AFTER Dec. 31, 1981).
Nominees must spend the majority of their work time in the Promotional Products Industry.

Being named a recipient of a SAAGNY’s 40 Under Forty brings great benefits and also carries some obligations. Among the benefits:

You will be publicly recognized as an exceptional leader through published profiles in SAAGNY Life and SAAGNY’s social media channels, email newsletters, and advertising
You will be celebrated at the Annual Awards Celebration along with your fellow recipients and other Award recipients
You will be invited to attend private, invitation-only networking events to foster a strong bond between recipients.

Being named a SAAGNY’s 40 Under Forty recipient also carries some obligations. Among those are the following:

The Power of “1”

From Maine to Chesapeake and Long Island to Pittsburgh we have you covered! The Chesapeake Promotional Products Association (CPPA), New England Promotional Products Association (NEPPA), Philadelphia Area Promotional Products Association (PAPPA), Specialty Advertising Association of Greater New York (SAAGNY), and Three Rivers Advertising Specialty Association (TRASA) are proud to announce the first annual Power of “1” collaboration debuting January 2022.

CPPA NEPPA, PAPPA, SAAGNY, and TRASA, are all members of District 1, one of the seven districts within the Regional Association Council (RAC) which exists to foster communication and cooperation between the regional association community members and with Promotional Products Association International (PPAI). This group is excited to announce their first annual show collaboration amongst all five regionals to be held January 24 -28, 2022. Each day of the week a different regional and not to be missed educational component will be included in the Power of “1” Tour. David Kennealey, President, NEPPA, added “I love the fact that the District 1 regional associations are working together to announce this week-long event earlier than ever before. This will allow our supplier partners to strategically plan their show calendars for 2022 to participate in this must-do event.”

“Collaboration is where great things take place. When the Presidents and Executive Directors of these regional associations connected and began brainstorming on how we could collectively bring value, as a group, to all our members, that’s where the magic happened. I am excited to show ALL the members what we have in store, so stay tuned. I am very proud to work with this solid group of professionals who bring a wealth of expertise and talent to the table.” noted Cliff Quicksell, MAS+, President, CPPA who described the process that brought this alliance together.

The first collaboration these outstanding group of leaders had was in 2020, a President Panel Discussion via webinar followed by a second President Panel discussion in 2021. Mark Colfer, PAPPA President, commented, “The District 1 Executive Directors and respective Association Presidents have been collaborating and wanting to plan something different for 2022. We are thrilled to announce The Power of “1”– 5 days of events showcasing valuable product and selling ideas, education, and fun. We look forward to seeing everyone throughout this week in January!”

Updated news on Business Meal Tax Deduction

The IRS recently issued Notice 2021-25 to implement the provision of the Taxpayer Certainty and Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2020 which provides for 100% deduction for qualifying business meal expenses incurred between January 2, 2021 and December 31, 2022.

This will be beneficial both for the businesses ( for example, independent contractors, sales people on the road) that have these types of expenses and for the restaurants that are hoping to drive increased spending. This notice outlines the types of expenses that are covered by the provision as well as its parameters and limits. Businesses or individuals that have, or expect to have, meal expenses in the next two years should make sure that they are taking maximum advantage of this new provision.

Thank you to all who attended the SAAGNY Outdoor Showcase held yesterday at the Crown Plaza, Suffern, NY. With over 100 distributors in attendance along with 56 suppliers representing more than 100 lines.

Even through the masks you could see the smiles and enthusiasm for all those that were in attendance. As the first in person SAAGNY trade show since Covid began, it was a resounding success. Although there was some light rain fifteen minutes prior to the show closing, it did not dampen anyone’s spirits.

The Passing of Richard Stromberg

Industry veteran, Richard Stromberg, CAS, Chairman of StrombergBrand Umbrellas, has passed away at the age of 78.

The Stromberg family has announced with great sadness that Richard Stromberg passed away on March 17, 2021.

Known for his boundless positive energy and enthusiasm, even in recent years while coping with the increasing challenges presented by Multiple Sclerosis, Mr. Stromberg worked every day until his passing. Continuous development of the business and its product line was his focus, as well as directing creative projects and providing his years of wisdom to the StrombergBrand team.

Mr. Stromberg began his career at his family’s retail/wholesale umbrella business, which was founded by his father, Jaye Stromberg, in 1942. He worked his way up from what he fondly described as “chief broom pusher” to assuming ownership in 1967. From then on, he made it his life’s work to learn more than just about anyone about umbrella production. He wanted to know every detail about stitching, fabric, frames, components, and more -- traveling around the world from France to Italy, the UK, Germany, China, Taiwan, and South Korea to meet and work with top manufacturers.

After offering his products in the premium market, Mr. Stromberg entered the promotional products industry and exhibited at his first trade show in 1968, in New York City. He was interviewed on his 50^th anniversary in the industry and said: “Before I signed up for that show, I didn’t even know what ‘ad specialty’ was! A neighboring exhibitor filled me in on many details of the industry. I grew to love the business and the people in it.” He was a lifelong supporter and active participant of industry groups and associations, having served on various committees over the years, and earned his CAS designation in the 1970s.

Helen Stromberg, Mr. Stromberg’s wife, who has been with the company since 1981, continues in the position of President. Their daughter, Jennifer Stromberg, assumed the role of company Vice President in 2020, ensuring a strategic third generation management transition.

“Richard has left us with a business that is thriving and with a wonderful team in place to continue operating in his legacy. Those of us who knew him were constantly uplifted by his favorite sayings, which were always ones of optimism: ‘Think positive,’ ‘Where there’s life there’s hope,’ and of course, ‘Carpe Diem.’ We have many things to thank him for, but most importantly, his constant encouragement to push forward, work hard, and believe in ourselves.”

Mr. Stromberg is survived by his wife, four daughters, five grandchildren, and countless lifelong and industry friends. In addition to his family, friends and work, his passions included reading, history, art, jazz music, astronomy, etymology, billiards, his country home, traveling to warm places, and murder mysteries.

Threats to Independent Contractor Model

Attention all Distributors, Suppliers, and Multi-Line representatives - if you employ independent contractors or operate your business as an independent contractor, this bill has the potential of having serious implications to you and your business. Please read below and contact your legislators NOW. Please consider making multiple phone calls and emails so the legislators understand the effects of this bill.

New legislation has been proposed in Congress that would effectively ban independent contractor classifications under federal labor law. The Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, H.R. 842, amends the National Labor Relations Act to establish a new definition of employees which expressly eliminates independent contractors in the U.S. The new legislation makes a broad presumption that all workers in the U.S. are employees unless each element of a newly established “ABC” test can be demonstrated. PPAI is opposed to the PRO Act because, if signed into law, it would significantly change how thousands of promotional products companies interact with each other, and it will eliminate jobs in our industry.

Specifically, the PRO Act would eliminate independent contractor agreements, enforce government control over private employment contracts and significantly broaden risk exposure to joint employer liability.

The legislation also sets new criteria for determining occupational status as an independent contractor instead of an employee. The proposed new criteria entail a three-pronged test for which each of the requirements must be proven if an independent contractor wants to retain his or her status under federal labor law.

The House is expected to consider H.R. 842 during the week of March 8, with a possible vote happening by the end of the week.

The Tee Hamilton Creative Scholarship - Apply Now!

The PromoKitchen board established this fund to honor our friend and founding PromoKitchen chef, Tee Hamilton, who lost her battle with cancer in December 2020.

Tee was a tireless advocate for the creative professional in the promotional products industry, and we are intent on continuing her crusade in this area.

The Tee Hamilton Creative Scholarship was created to support promotional product industry professionals in their pursuit of creative or business education by paying up to 80% towards courses and conferences.

We want to reduce the financial barriers associated with participating in continuing education.

Why does this matter? Because Tee believed that industry professionals who bettered themselves through education could create a strong and lasting legacy for themselves and the industry.

Here’s how it works:

Applications will be accepted between February 22 and March 26, 2021.

Applicants who are chosen will have up to 80% of the cost of the course or conference paid for.

The course or conference must be completed or attended before February 2022.

The recipient of the scholarship will be required to follow up with PromoKitchen after the course is completed or conference is attended, by sharing your experience with the community and how this was able to benefit you in your promotional products career. This could take the form of a podcast or written interview, video, blog, etc

The winner will be announced at our virtual Spring Fling Mixer on April 8, 2021.

SAAGNY Executive Director Earns CAE

The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) officially announced their 2021 recipients of their CAE designations. Rachel Levin, CAS, SAAGNY President noted, “We are so proud to announce that our very own, brilliant, Executive Director, Donna-Jean Plante, CAE, is one of only 189 nationwide to have recently earned this prestigious designation by passing the December 2020 exam. The CAE is the highest professional credential in the association industry.”

To be designated as a Certified Association Executive, an applicant must have experience with nonprofit organization management, complete a minimum of 100 hours of specialized professional development, pass a stringent examination in association management, and pledge to uphold a code of ethics. To maintain the certification, individuals must undertake ongoing professional development and activities in association and nonprofit management. More than 4,700 association professionals currently hold the CAE credential.

Make sure you are processing any CARES act payments that you may be entitled to. The PPP loans are applied for at your bank and the ERC is applied for thorough current or amended 941X’s.

The upcoming deadlines are:

1)Payroll Protection Program – round 2 (PPP2)- application due by 3/31/2021 or when monies run out

2)Payroll Protection Program – round 1 (PPP1)- if not file already due by 3/31/2021 or when monies run out

3)Employer retention credits- now available for wages paid in 2020 not covered by PPP1 or 2 loans. – 941X forms will need to be filed, filing the sooner the better

4)PPP1 forgiveness applications are due 10 months after the end of the covered period. (April-June 2021)

The new PPP2 fund rules are:

Eligibility:

<300 employees (hospitality exception)
Have used (or will use) the full amount of PPP1 on eligible expenses
In operations 2/15/2020
Revenue deduction of 25% in any quarter 2020 compared to same quarter 2019 (or annual 2020 to 2019)

Computation

Payroll costs are computed using either 2019 or 2020 wages, whichever is higher
Use monthly average payroll costs (gross wages +retirement + health costs)/12 months x 2.5 (3.5 for hospitality)
Self-employed sole practitioner, 2% shareholder/partner/owner is based on 2019 or 2020 net income
Exclude excess payroll over $100K

Employer Retention Credit rules are:

Eligibility for 2020 wages:

Fully or partially suspended or reduced business hours due to government order. Or that quarters gross receipts 50% below same quarter in 2019(not including PPP)

Computation

50% of wages up to $10,000 ($5,000 credit), per employee annually
Wages after March 13 not covered by PPP loans are eligible

SAAGNY Member Linda Black - Renewal Kidney Awareness Call

As you all know I am second generation in the Promotional Products world, and having lost my father 2 ½ years ago, I never imagined how I would continue in this business. Somehow you do, and it’s through the support of many friends and colleagues that you do. This past February, my mother took ill and at the time we didn’t know it, but she was battling COVID-19, which left her in Kidney failure. It turns out that she was lucky to have gotten COVID-19, prior to us knowing what it was because she was treated with heavy medicines and heavy doses of Oxygen. Linda goes to Dialysis every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2 to 5 PM, and since March I have been able to take her and pick up from every session.

We have had numerous doctor appointments, and every time she gets good news about how she is doing. They are all so encouraging, that the Doctors believe that one day she will be able to give up dialysis, but only if she is to be a recipient of a new Kidney.

We have been introduced to Renewal, a non-profit organization that assists with matching prospective donors with people on the Kidney Registry List, which Linda is now on.

On Wednesday January 6^th, at 7:30PM (est.) my family and Renewal will be hosting a zoom call which is informational about how we can all help out with awareness and knowledge to assist no only my mother, but others who may be in a similar situation.

Hi, SAAGNY Members,

Happy New Year! I am honored to be serving as your 2021 SAAGNY President.

In 2018 during our annual SAAGNY Board retreat, the Board developed a strategic plan where, a commitment to membership was made to lead forward, continue to grow and practice our mission statement - “SAAGNY creates an environment that advances business development of the promotional product industry through dissemination of product information, networking, and knowledge exchange.” We committed to move ahead with a strong vision and heart. The SAAGNY Board of Directors continued to establish tradeshows unparallel to many regionals, enhanced our value proposition for our members, and stayed focused at the job at a hand.

And then… 2020 happened. What we thought were our problems were sidelined by a need to simply change the air we breathe. COVID-19 has caused SAAGNY (as many others) to quickly change course, reevaluate our priorities, and turn to our members to help them emerge through a time of the unknown. Led by previous SAAGNY President Paul Sprunk and the talent from our Executive committee, to our Board of Directors, our Volunteer Committees, our Task Force, and of course our incredible Executive Director, I can confidently say, we did it! I am proud of all of those involved in challenging our ambitions and coming through to the other side, slightly unscathed.

However, as you know we cannot stop here. 2021 will continue to be a “challenging” year but we all know through challenges come remarkable opportunities. It is my goal to seize those opportunities and make sure SAAGNY continues its legacy of the greatest regional trade association in our industry. SAAGNY was founded in 1955, and through the years had incredible past presidents and members, who have forged a path that has led me here and the role of President, one that I do not take lightly and one that I will not disappoint.

Becoming President through a pandemic, taking back Promotions East, and truly entering a world of evolution that many of us have not experienced is the greatest challenge and I am prepared, excited, and more motivated then ever!

This is OUR time to evolve as an industry, as a regional, and will do so through the solid support of the current Board of Directors: Michael Reisbaum, Vice President, Christian Brandt, Secretary/Treasurer, Paul Sprunk, Immediate Past President, Sean Kurtzman, Natasha Jinks, and our newly appointed, talented Eric Levin, Joe Favre, and Jeff Jacobs.

I want to personally wish John Cudahy the very best as he exits as Past President. John has truly been an unbelievable asset to this organization. I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to Paul Sprunk, our current Past President, as he led us through a period that no one could have foreseen and did so with grace, patience, and leadership. I am grateful to have you still by my side.

I cannot end this note without acknowledging our right hand (and sometimes left), Donna-Jean Plante, the Executive Director of SAAGNY, who has been a sounding board, a voice of reason, our calendar, and the backbone of the organization.

2021 has come along so quickly and we have already started making plans. I will be sure to keep you apprised with all pertinent information, all the while staying committed and focused to the job at hand - leading SAAGNY through an evolution!

Farewell From SAAGNY President Paul Sprunk

Thankfully the end of 2020 is near, and a vaccine is in the mail, as they say!

It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve as your SAAGNY President for the last two years. The term for President is one year with an option for a second year - I thought 2019 went well and decided to take on another year, who know the second year would be consumed by COVID-19! With COVID-19 affecting us since early March, SAAGNY was only able to produce one live Trade Show during all of 2020 but SAAGNY, like all of us, is resilient and we forged on with 15 Virtual Trade Shows held in June and September and other numerous virtual events and educational webinars.

As SAAGNY President, I was looking forward to our new and second end user show, to be held in Melville, NY in the Spring of 2020 but that will have to wait for another year. I always enjoyed our lively in-person Board Meetings, but like everything else all were held via Zoom. SAAGNY was proud to announce mid-year that Promotions East was back under the SAAGNY umbrella. A Promotions East Committee was formed and look for some exciting announcements from SAAGNY in 2021 regarding this show. The landscape has certainly changed but SAAGNY is still your source for all things Promotional Products.

I will now serve as Immediate Past President and will assist new President Rachel Levin and the 2021 Board in SAAGNY’s endeavors for the coming year. We have three new Board Members joining us, Jeff Jacobs, Eric Levin, and Joe Favre. They have already participated in a meeting or two and will hit the ground running January 1 with the rest of the Board.

Many thanks to Trish Glazer and Irwin Kotcher who are leaving the Board. Both have served SAAGNY well and it was a pleasure to work with them. They are both aware that if needed, they will be called upon to help us get through 2021! SAAGNY is also saying goodbye to its current Immediate Past President, John R. B. Cudahy, MAS. John has served on the board for more than thirteen years and his knowledge, experience, and point of views have been a true asset to SAAGNY. He will be missed but we know we can reach out to him at any time for help and advice. Finally, I was fortunate enough to have DJ as our Executive Director. She always made me look good, offered great advice, and was the rock for SAAGNY to get through 2020.

Thank you to all for your patience with me as I learned on the job. It was a fun ride and I hope I am leaving SAAGNY a little bit better than when I arrived.

Farewell From Fred Snyder

I learned over the last months that I really like being home and not constantly travelling. Wanting to spend more time with my young grandchildren and not miss watching them grow up. I am also looking forward to helping my wife, Jacqui, with her business as a Geiger salespartner, something I haven’t been able to do in the past.

Persistence and a commitment to relationship building have defined my career. I credit much of this success as a recruiter and mentor to my background in sales. I understand what salespeople want, what they need to do, what they’d prefer to avoid, and the heartbreak of losing a big order they thought was theirs.

I started with Geiger in 1994 by answering a job advertisement for a division manager at Martin Meyers Company, a Geiger-owned business in Pennsylvania. I wasn’t looking for a career, since prior to Geiger I never stayed in the same place for more than 5 years. The people and sense of community at Geiger and this industry, kept me coming back. I was “having too good a time” to go elsewhere.

When I first started, I had no experience with promotional products, but I knew how to sell. I had to work hard to acquire the necessary knowledge by taking the supplier catalogs home each night and memorizing the information in them. I became well-recognized by the salesforce for product knowledge and research speed. I didn’t share this secret – I also had an early copy of ESP!!!

I am very proud of recruiting quality people to the team and feel that building relationships is the key success in this wonderful industry. Others have agreed, honoring me with awards like being named to ASI’s People to Watch in the 2000s, PPB’s 2010 Best Bosses, President of PAPPA (SACDV at the time) several times, PAPPA 2014 Humanitarian of the Year and the PAPPA Hall of Fame. I am very grateful for being a part of founding of RAC and believe so strongly in the outstanding network of regional associations

This industry is so very special. The nature of my position had me active with PAPPA, SAAGNY and NEPPA. SAAGNY, in particular, invokes warm feelings of the early days at the Concord, to the excitement of the first End User Event in Manhattan.

One of my first ideas for Geiger in 1994 failed miserably. Gene Geiger called me about it not long after, mentioning that he’d heard that it didn’t go well but made me promise to keep the ideas coming. I think that particular speech, more than anything, kept me at Geiger and in the industry for the next 26 years.

Perhaps the most admired part of Mark’s legacy is the relationships that he has built over 35 years. Employees, clients, and supplier partners know Mark as an honest, trustworthy leader in the industry. He leaves the organization in solid standing with systems the company can continue to use to grow.

The Specialty Advertising Association of Greater New York (SAAGNY) elected four industry veterans to serve on the Board of Directors during its Annual Meeting this week. All terms begin on January 1, 2021.

Joe Favre, Vanguard, and Jeff Jacobs, Jack Nadel International, were elected to the board and Christian Brandt and Michael Reisbaum, Blue Generation, were elected to a second term. These Directors bring many years of industry experience to the Board of Directors and a fresh perspective as SAAGNY enters a new chapter in its existence.

Promotions East Returns to SAAGNY

Promotions East (and later, Expo East) has been a Promotional Products “must-go” since its inception in Atlantic City as the premier Northeast Tradeshow bringing suppliers and distributors together. As a staple to thousands of Promotional Products professionals worldwide, Promotions East combines the experience of a national trade show with the atmosphere only a close-knit community can provide.

Historically produced in the summer months, SAAGNY is looking forward to Promotions East returning to SAAGNY and its calendar of premier industry events. SAAGNY will continue to build upon the tradition of success that Promotions East and Expo East has offered for generations of Promo Professionals.

“This show has served the northeast region for many years, bringing top-notch exhibitors and quality distributors together, resulting in unparalleled business opportunities,” said Paul Bellantone, CAE, president and CEO of PPAI. “As show manager of Expo East, we saw firsthand the dedication and commitment of the SAAGNY staff and volunteers, and have no doubt SAAGNY will continue to elevate the Promotions East experience. SAAGNY Supplier Update: Cedar Crest

As some of you know and some of you don’t, Cedar Crest (and the entire Cedar Rapids area including 20 counties) was hit by an severe storm with 100+ mph winds. We lost all power, internet and cell phone service area wide. Both of the electric utilities and all cell phone providers went down Monday about noon. Cedar Crest was not able to contact anyone to let them know what was happening until power was restored this morning. Cedar Crest is not operational yet but they do now have access to their computer system. They are in the process of trying to contact their personnel who most are still without communication capability.

Cedar Crest is in the process of contacting customers who have orders in-house to let them know the status and find out if they still want the orders to ship. UPS and FedEx are only partially operational so shipping service will be questionable until Monday or Tuesday of next week.

Update: Raining Rose is open as of August 18, 2020.

Raining Rose is currently closed due to a power outage caused by a storm and high winds that hit Cedar Rapids on Monday, August 10^th. Most importantly, our team members are safe. We are assessing damage and working to get power restored as quickly as possible. While there is no timetable yet, we are working with local officials to be up and running as soon as we can.

Although The SAAGNY Foundation Day of Service at Happiness is Camping was canceled for 2020 – the Foundation Board found a creative way to bring some joy to the children of Happiness is Camping.

Since in-person camp had been canceled for 2020 – campers were being treated to virtual options throughout the summer. The SAAGNY Foundation arranged for the campers to be treated to a magic show from Michael Kirschner, nephew of The SAAGNY Foundation Trustee Neil Kirschner. Michael’s show was an interactive experience using mentalism and magic to promote respect and kindness. Michael was gracious enough to donate his time to the children. The children and their parents and siblings were delighted with the program and the opportunity that the SAAGNY Foundation was able to provide. PPAI has named SAAGNY Past President Paula Shulman, CAS, president of Stamford, Connecticut-based PMS Consulting, as recipient of the Association’s 2020 Woman of Achievement award.

The PPAI Woman of Achievement award recognizes an individual who has led the way in the advancement of women in the industry, exhibited outstanding leadership and made significant contributions to the industry and her community. The PPAI Woman of Achievement constantly strives to go above and beyond. She leads the way by setting the standard of excellence in the industry. She’s an inspiration to others, a role model and mentor. She simply stands out in a crowd.

With a career spanning more than 40 years in the promotional products industry, Shulman was one of the first women to climb the corporate ladder to become the vice president of sales at supplier Prime Line. Shulman is now involved with PMS Consulting and primarily focuses on strategic guidance for trade shows, sales transition, industry events and new product development. She also holds positions on several industry boards.

The Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act Was Signed Into Law

The Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act Was signed into law. Below are some of the highlights:

Extends PPP coverage period through December 31, 2020.
Gives 24 weeks rather than 8 weeks to spend
1. If business received PPP prior to June 4, 2020 they can retain the 8 week covered period, can elect to do 24 weeks but may need to demonstrate compliance with requirements to maintain employee levels for 24 weeks.
No new loans after June 30, 2020.
Reduced percentage that must be spent on payroll from 75% to 60% - can spend more on overhead and fixed expenses such as rent and utilities.
Extends the Safe Harbor restoration deadline from June 30, 2020 to December 31, 2020.
Will not reduce forgiveness based on inability to rehire employees if employer can document:
1. Written offer to rehire individuals who were employees of the organization on February 15, 2020.
2. Inability to hire similar qualified employees for unfilled positions by December 31, 2020.
Forgiveness will not be reduced for failure to maintain employment levels if organization is able to document an inability to return to same level of business activity that existed prior to February 15 due to compliance with COVID legislation.
Loan repayments: extends the deferral period from six months to the time when the SBA compensates the lender for forgiven amounts, except that repayments can be required if the borrower has not applied for forgiveness within ten months of the expiration of the borrower's covered period.
Terms of PPP loan extended from two years to five years
Can defer social employer Social Security taxes even if you receive PPP loan .

PPP Loan Forgiveness Update

The U.S. Senate passed the House version of Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) legislation Wednesday night, tripling the time allotted for small businesses and other PPP loan recipients to spend the funds and still qualify for forgiveness of the loans.

The bill passed in a unanimous voice vote hours after Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson raised concerns that initially blocked the package. Among the key provisions is a change in the threshold for the amount of PPP funds required to be spent on payroll costs to qualify for forgiveness to 60% of the loan amount.

The Senate approval sends the House bill to the White House for signature.

The vote had to be unanimous because the Senate is not officially in session. That meant that any senator could force the matter to be delayed until the Senate returned to Washington with enough members for a quorum and a vote. Leaders from both parties in the Senate pushed to pass the legislation on Wednesday as the clock on the initial eight-week window recently expired for the first recipients of PPP loans. Johnson dropped his objections after Senate leader Mitch McConnell agreed to add a letter to the Congressional Record clarifying that June 30 remains the deadline for applying to receive a PPP loan. The bill moves the June 30 deadline for spending the PPP funds to Dec. 31 to accommodate the new 24-week window.

Following is a summary of the legislation’s main points compiled by the American Institute for Certified Public Accountants (thank you to AICPA for this update):

· Current PPP borrowers can choose to extend the eight-week period to 24 weeks, or they can keep the original eight-week period. New PPP borrowers will have a 24-week covered period, but the covered period can’t extend beyond Dec. 31, 2020. This flexibility is designed to make it easier for more borrowers to reach full, or almost full, forgiveness.

· Under the language in the House bill, the payroll expenditure requirement drops to 60% from 75% but is now a cliff, meaning that borrowers must spend at least 60% on payroll or none of the loan will be forgiven. Currently, a borrower is required to reduce the amount eligible for forgiveness if less than 75% of eligible funds are used for payroll costs, but forgiveness isn’t eliminated if the 75% threshold isn’t met. Rep. Chip Roy (Texas), who co-sponsored the bill in the House, said in a House speech that the bill intended the sliding scale to remain in effect at 60%. Senators Marco Rubio and Susan Collins indicated that technical tweaks could be made to the bill to restore the sliding scale.

· Borrowers can use the 24-week period to restore their workforce levels and wages to the pre-pandemic levels required for full forgiveness. This must be done by Dec. 31, a change from the previous deadline of June 30.

· The legislation includes two new exceptions allowing borrowers to achieve full PPP loan forgiveness even if they don’t fully restore their workforce. Previous guidance already allowed borrowers to exclude from those calculations employees who turned down good faith offers to be rehired at the same hours and wages as before the pandemic. The new bill allows borrowers to adjust because they could not find qualified employees or were unable to restore business operations to Feb. 15, 2020, levels due to COVID-19 related operating restrictions.

· New borrowers now have five years to repay the loan instead of two. Existing PPP loans can be extended up to 5 years if the lender and borrower agree. The interest rate remains at 1%.

· The bill allows businesses that took a PPP loan to also delay payment of their payroll taxes, which was prohibited under the CARES Act.

We hope you and your families are safe and healthy. Just want to update you on the status of our summer events. Unfortunately, there will be no camp or school summer programming.

Since Happiness Is Camping had to cancel all sessions this summer, they are planning to give the kids a mix of activities at home - arts & crafts, outdoor challenges, Zoom sessions etc. and some live sessions each night that mirror their traditional evening activities. Neil Kirschner put us in touch with his nephew Michael Kirschner, a professional magician, who will be doing virtual shows for various camps this summer. We have arranged for him to do a show for these kids one evening. This is an interactive experience that uses mentalism and magic. We are so excited that the Foundation will be able to provide these kids with a meaningful experience during this difficult and disappointing time.

Given the nature of the students at Hilltop School, sadly this virtual magic show would not be feasible.

We so appreciate our wonderful volunteers and look forward to seeing you next year when summer activities may resume.

SAAGNY recently came across small business grant information and wanted to share these opportunities with our members and partners in case your companies might meet the eligibility requirements and are able apply. These are small business grants provided by different sources to assist small businesses that have been negatively impacted by Covid-19.

Please review the information to see if your business meets the eligibility and other requirements before you apply. SAAGNY will continue to research grants, loans and share pertinent information to help support our members and the industry in these unprecedented times.

Salesforce Small Business Grants (East)

*The application portal is open from now until May 4th 11:59p PST.

Salesforce will be offering Salesforce Care Small Business Grants of $10,000 to provide capital to help keep businesses afloat. These grants will support small businesses as they work to replenish materials, pay salaries, or adapt their business model to overcome these challenging times.

To be eligible to apply, businesses must:

– Be a for-profit business
– Have between 2 to 50 employees
– Have been in business for 2 years as of March 2020
– Have an annual revenue between $250k to $2M
– Have experienced challenges from COVID-19
– Meet all other eligibility requirements as stated in the Grant Program Terms

Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)

*Applications for round 2 are now closed. The next round will open on May 14th. Grants will be made in the amounts of $5,000, $7,500, and $10,000.

LISC supports small businesses and enterprises affected the Covid-19 across the country, especially those in underserved communities, including entrepreneurs of color, women- and veteran-owned businesses that often lack access to flexible, affordable capital.

Applications will be reviewed based on criteria designed to prioritize particularly challenged businesses, and the final grantees will be randomly selected from the top scoring applicants.

Global Giving (Red Backpack Fund)

*The portal will open for applications again on May 4, June 1, July 6, and August 3.

The Red Backpack Fund is an initiative started by The Spanx by Sara Blakely Foundation. The foundation donated $5 million to GlobalGiving who will be making at least 1,000 grants of $5,000 each to female entrepreneurs in the U.S. to help alleviate the immediate needs and support the long-term recovery of those impacted by Covid-19.

The first round of applications were open from April 6 at 12pm ET through April 12 at 11:59pm ET. Final grant recipients will be notified by the week of May 11. Each month, we will accept additional applications.

SENATE PASSES BILL PROVIDING ADDITIONAL FUNDS FOR PPP AND OTHER PROGRAMS

The Senate passed legislation this afternoon providing additional funding for the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). The program, established as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief And Economic Security (CARES) Act last month, provides forgivable loans of up to $10 million to small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic to help them meet payroll and day-to-day operating expenses. The program ran through its initial $349 billion last week.

The $484 billion legislation, the result of several days of negotiation between Senate Republicans and Democrats, and the White House, provides an additional $320 billion for the PPP—with $60 billion earmarked for smaller lenders—as well as $60 billion for the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program—which provides small businesses with working capital loans of up to $2 million to overcome the temporary loss of revenue due to the pandemic—$25 billion for testing, $75 billion for hospitals and $11 billion for state programs.

The Senate passed the legislation following a unanimous consent vote. It now goes to the House of Representatives. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer sent out a schedule update this week that suggests the House could vote on the bill as early as tomorrow.

SBA's Paycheck Protection Program

The SBA has issued some details and sample applications for the Paycheck protection program.

Business applications are suppose to be available Friday April 3.

You will need to certify that your business has been impacted by the virus.

Loan amounts are 2 months of last years payroll plus 25%

Forgiveness will be for payroll and some overhead expenses paid 8 weeks after the loan is provided.

Unforgiven amounts are due within 2 years, however no payments are due for the first 6 months.

The Passing of Sidney Siegel

On March 29^th, Sidney Siegel one of the true pioneers of our industry and founder of Industrial Contacts, passed away from complications due to Covid-19. With little money or experience, he started Industrial Contacts, one of the first Promotional Products companies in New York City, over 60 years ago. It didn’t take too long before Sid Siegel had a reputation as being one of the most creative minds our industry has ever seen.

Sid’s early days started with his background in emblematic jewelry which he soon segued into a larger scope of promotional products and custom manufacturing, due to the high demand of his growing clientele. Industrial Contacts was one of the first companies to work with Japan, before China became a player, where he produced custom shaped radios such as football helmets for the NFL, top shelf liquor bottles, Brut cologne and Pepsi vending machines. The liquor industry soon became his niche. Some of his most prominent work included ceramic figurines, metal signs, and lucite bottle embedment.

Sid created and produced the Clio Award, still used today to honor the best television commercials. He was one of the first to start the company store catalog (of course in print before later technology developments) which he established for brands like Pepsi and Met Life. His creativity along with his out of the box thinking earned him the cover story of Counselor Magazine in 1974.

His ingenious and clever thinking was one of the reasons for his great success, but it was his charismatic personality combined with his sense of humor that truly made a lasting impression.

Today, Industrial Contacts is led by his son Steve and his grandson Daniel. Sid’s daughter Mindy is also involved in the company and plays an important role on the sales team. The company continues to follow in his footsteps with a strong focus on the beverage industry. Sid continued to have daily conversations with Steve and Daniel about the happenings of the business and was never one to shy away from offering his advice.

Although business was his “baby” that he always cherished , nothing took precedence over his family. He was married to his late wife Joyce for 65, years who played an integral role in the success of Industrial Contacts. Nothing brought Sid more joy than spending time with family, and watching the successes and achievements of his kids and four grandchildren. His leisure time was usually spent playing golf or on the tennis court.

Sid will be missed not only by his family and friends but anyone who had the pleasure to meet him.

2020 Expo East Cancelled

A Message from PPAI President & CEO Paul Bellantone, CAE

As I've stated in previous emails, as recently as yesterday, we here at PPAI are making some tough decisions based on the continuing challenges facing us during these unprecedented times. These decisions are not unlike the ones you are likely making regarding your businesses.

Based on the current COVID-19 situation, the importance of your health and safety and the practicality of holding a show in a building that is currently being considered as a backup medical facility, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Expo East, effective immediately. We feel this is a sensitive and responsible action considering the shelter-in-place restrictions in many areas across the United States and the recent announcement deeming the Atlantic City Convention Center a temporary field hospital to accommodate expanded capacity.

The cancellation includes all education sessions on Wednesday, June 3 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City as well as the trade show exhibits on Thursday, June 4 and Friday, June 5 at the Atlantic City Convention Center.

Exhibitors and attendees already signed up for Expo East will receive additional updates regarding the next steps. We are hopeful this crisis will be resolved soon, and we can then work together toward the recovery and rebuilding of our industry and our daily lives.

Everyone's health and safety are our utmost concern. If you have any questions, we will do our best to answer them quickly. We appreciate your support and understanding.

Dear PPAI Member:

First and foremost, I hope you, your families and your coworkers are healthy and doing as well as possible under these uncertain and trying conditions. Like all of you, the team and I at PPAI continue to monitor the situation, adjust, adapt and continue to hope and pray for improvement. Now, as always, my promise to you is that PPAI will not lose its focus – you and your business. The promotional products community has weathered many challenges in the past and we always come out stronger because we stand and work together. Our primary goals over the next days and weeks are twofold. First, to make sure we can continue, along with our service partners, to provide essential services to members and the industry. Second, to make the necessary business decisions to ensure that there is a strong and relevant trade association in place to help you recover and rebuild when this crisis ends.

As the news about COVID-19 continues to pour in, I understand many of you are seeking some sense of normalcy in a situation that is far from normal. With all of this in mind, I want to remind you of some resources that are available to you, as well as update you on a few things:

Working From Home – Out of an abundance of caution and under the direction of local officials, PPAI staff members are now working from home. We prepared for this likelihood in advance and as a result you should experience no interruption in service.

Additionally, PPAI is having to make some very tough decisions regarding events:

Promotional Products Work Week Postponed – We will postpone this week-long event, originally scheduled for May 4-8, to coincide with Advertising Week, October 5-8, where we already invest heavily in industry advocacy activities. The industry and Association will use this as a rallying point to begin rebuilding and the early October dates can be both timely and fortuitous.
PPAI's Legislative Education and Action Day (L.E.A.D.) Cancelled – Our annual visit to Washington, D.C., originally scheduled for May 6-7, in which our members represent and lobby on behalf of our great industry, has been cancelled. However, we intend to encourage all members to reach out to their members of Congress to thank them for their work on behalf of all of us and ask them to keep the needs of small businesses top-of-mind.
SPARK Conference Cancelled – While we recognize the importance of young professionals to the well-being and future success of our industry, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this program, originally scheduled for July 15-17. However, PPAI is considering making SPARK a one-day event in conjunction with The PPAI Expo in January 2021. We will continue to find ways to serve this vital community.
Other PPAI Events - Currently all other events are being evaluated. Rest assured, when the cancellation of any event is discussed, so too is the opportunity to offer programming in a virtual environment. Please know that all decisions will be made with your best interests in mind.

We have all entered uncharted waters together, and it will take cooperation, support, compassion and sound business decisions for us to get through this. Together it is possible.

As I look ahead, I want you to know we will continue to evaluate and redefine every aspect of our business, as necessary, in order to provide you with the support you need. We will work together with you to ensure that your business and your Association are around for the next 100 years.

FAMILIES FIRST CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE ACT: QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

The Department of Labor (DOL) has been busily preparing for the implementation of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA). The DOL has created a page of FAQs, which it has continued to add to in recent days, that provides answers to most of the biggest and most pressing questions regarding the FFCRA - https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/pandemic/ffcra-questions

In particular the FAQs:

Provide that the law will go into effect on April 1, 2020. As we previously noted, the text of the FFCRA states that the act takes effect "not later than 15 days after the date of enactment." Thus, the widespread understanding was that the FFCRA would go into effect on April 2 (the 15th day after enactment). The DOL has made it clear that this is not the case and that the law will be effective April 1, 2020. See FAQ #1.
Confirm that employees will only be able to take leave under the FFCRA if the employer otherwise has work for them to do. In other words, if an employee is furloughed before or after April 1, the employee will not be eligible for FFCRA. Likewise, if an employee's hours are reduced, the employee will only be able to take FFCRA leave to receive paid leave based on their reduced schedule. See FAQ # 23 through 28.
Specify that employers will not receive credit for any leave for FFCRA purposes that they have voluntarily provided to employees prior to April 1. As of April 1, any employee who is eligible for FFCRA leave must receive the full leave regardless of any leave previously provided to them.
Provide guidance on how employers should calculate whether they are under or over the 500 employee threshold for the purposes of the FFCRA. See FAQ #2.
Explain the general framework for businesses with less than fifty employees to claim an exemption to the FFCRA and specify that the business may do so if an officer of the business determines the business falls into one of three scenarios as described in the FAQs. See FAQ # 58 and 59.

The FAQs are among the helpful resources that the Department of Labor has provided on its COVID-19 site, which we would encourage you to keep an eye on for further updates - https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/pandemic

On that site, the DOL has published the model notice that employers will be required to post and advise employees of their rights under the FFCRA. However, the DOL will need to revise and reissue these notices before April 1 as the CARES Act changes the maximum that an employee may receive while on emergency FMLA (reducing the max from $12,000 to $10,000)
